The United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Israel participate in the Apostille Convention. An apostille verifies a public document’s signature, official capacity and seal; it does not replace translation requirements or guarantee acceptance of the document’s contents.
State-issued records and notarized documents generally use the appropriate state authority; federal documents use the U.S. Department of State. Original birth certificates and notarized translations can follow different routes.

Eligible UK documents go through the FCDO Legalisation Office. A paper apostille and an e-Apostille are not interchangeable for every document or recipient; check the required format before arranging translation and delivery.
DFAT handles apostilles for eligible Australian documents. Original public documents and documents first notarized by an Australian Notary Public have different preparation requirements. Confirm which original or certified form the recipient needs.
